We did not stumble into Netezza. We built our entire company around it. Founded in 2003 by specialists who had already spent years working with Netezza systems, Smart Associates has been the independent expert in this platform for more than two decades.

Our Story

Built Around One Platform, Refined Over Two Decades

Smart Associates was founded in 2003 from a simple observation: Netezza Performance Server systems are extraordinary pieces of engineering, but the organisations running them rarely have the deep specialist expertise needed to keep them running optimally over the long term. IBM®’s support was comprehensive but expensive. Generalised data support providers lacked the platform-specific depth to be genuinely useful.

We set out to fill that gap. Over time, that mission expanded from consulting and support into software: the Smart Management Frameworks suite, which automates the management tasks that most Netezza shops handle manually (or not at all), and Smart Data Frameworks, which automates the complex work of migrating and integrating Netezza data with modern cloud platforms.

As IBM has progressively wound down support for older Netezza hardware, we have become the continuity partner of choice for organisations who need their systems to keep running — safely, securely, and at peak performance — while they plan the next chapter of their data platform.

Our team includes former IBM Netezza engineers, data architects, software engineers, finance professionals, and management consultants. That breadth means we can engage at the technical level and the business level simultaneously — which is how we prefer to work.

Company History

Two Decades of Milestones

2003: Smart Associates Founded
Established as a specialist data warehouse consulting practice with a focus on IBM Netezza Performance Server systems.
2010s: Smart Management Frameworks Launched
After years of building bespoke automation scripts for clients, SMF was formalised as a product: a structured suite covering replication, access control, and system management.
2018: Netezza Support Plus Introduced
Launched independent Netezza support as IBM began its slow withdrawal from the platform, providing continuity for customers facing End of Support on legacy hardware.
2020s: Smart Data Frameworks Developed
As cloud migration demand accelerated, SDF was built to automate the complex, risk-prone work of moving Netezza data and workloads to modern platforms including Databricks and Snowflake.
2024+: IBM EOS Era: Smart Associates Steps Up
With IBM ending support for Striper, Mako, Hammerhead, and CP4D platforms across 2024–2026, Smart Associates becomes the primary continuity partner for organisations committed to Netezza for the long term.
